Creating Project Plan in MS Project
Every time I create a new MPP, I ask this question to myself “How and where to start?”. I very well remember the first time I created a Microsoft project plan and I was struggling on strategy to put a plan in place. There was nobody to mentor me. It is very essential that we start right. Here is what I found very useful for me:
- Identify tasks and Create task list
- Create a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
- Group the tasks based on functional or criteria in WBS
- Estimate every task in the WBS
- Then move all this information to Microsoft Project Plan or any other project management tool or you can even do step 1-4 inside the tool. I personally love to do with paper and pencil and then move it to software.
There is a very good tutorial on creating Microsoft Project Plan with the similar approach at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-help/create-a-project-plan-in-5-easy-steps-HA001136153.aspx

It is not about me, It is about Them
After reading a book titled “Go-Giver Sell More” by Bob Burg and John David Mann I learned that every action should remind me that “It is not about me, It is about Them”
Awesome, Fantastic, Life Changing, thought changing……………..book! I am totally moved by each and every line and each and every chapter.
What a great thought process Bob Burg has that he has captured every single thing that every person (in sales or not) should know. And it is not about knowing but it is about what we should implement.
Thanks to this book, both my professional and personal life has seen a huge positive change in last 5 days.
Thanks a lot to the author for writing this book and to my mentor for giving me this book. Thanks a lot!”

Guard your brand from Porn, reserve the .xxx domain
If you are a brand, I would encourage you to take a preemptive action and reserve your brand in .XXX registry ASAP before October 28, 2011. There is nothing worse than losing the brand reputation by letting some porn operator use your name.
Since last week the .XXX domains are available for the adult entertainment companies. So now any porn company can have yourcompanyname.XXX registered and use your name and loyal customers to increase their porn business and tarnish yourcompany image. But the good news is that there is a cooling-off period till Oct 28. All the companies outside of the porn space have enough time to protect their brands by taking a preventive measure of registering their trademark with .XXX before Oct 28.
In a worst case scenario if you choose not to reserve your domain, be ready to spend few thousand dollars in litigation cost or spend up to few millions if you choose to buy your domain back from a reseller.
The .XXX registry is operated by ICM Registry LLC. In order to reserve your brand with .XXX domain please go to a domain name registrar like networksolutions, godaddy.com. Please find the region specific list below with the links to the respective domain registration company.
Nine Things Successful People Do Differently
A must read blog by Heidi Grant Halvorson at Harvard Business Review. The following are the 9 things:
- Get specific.
- Seize the moment to act on your goals.
- Know exactly how far you have left to go.
- Be a realistic optimist.
- Focus on getting better, rather than being good.
- Have grit.
- Build your willpower muscle.
- Don’t tempt fate.
- Focus on what you will do, not what you won’t do.

Lessons from a CEO, Multi Millionaire and a Visionary
- Few weeks ago, I got a chance to talk to one of very successful CEO, mutli-millionaire and a visionary. I requested if he can share a key lesson learnt from his experience in his journey of success that can help me. After gathering his thoughts quickly he was humble enough to share two key lessons from his life.
- Weekly Self Assessment of things well done!
- Change as soon as you find things are not working.
The following is how I understood these 2 lessons:
- Sometime every week we should regularly asses our self for not only what we did wrong but especially what did we did right. Once we get into a habit of this we can know what we can continue doing for better and better results. As with time with things working well we forget the basics. This is all about keeping the basics that made the things go North. It is all about persistence and the power of compounding.
- As soon as you find things are not working as expected, change the factors in the equation. It is all about facing the challenge face-on and not delaying it to further time in a hope that it may get resolved on its own.
